This is not a wine trip. It is a course that happens to take place in Champagne, and the difference matters.
Over five days in October we work through the region systematically: history, grape varieties, villages and appellations first, then soil and climate, viticultural choices, pressing, fermentation, assemblage and cellar ageing. Each producer visit follows the classroom session it belongs to. What we discuss in the morning, we stand in front of that afternoon.
I run the teaching. Fifteen years as a sommelier, Wine Director at Maaemo, and now Managing Director at Norsk Vinfagskole. I am Norway's first certified Champagne Specialist from Comité Champagne. The access on this trip comes from relationships built over years, and some of these doors do not open for groups.
The route
Monday — Arrival in Reims. Opening session on the region, its villages and how to read a Champagne.
Tuesday — Aÿ, for Billecart-Salmon and Bollinger, then Mailly-Champagne and the co-operative Mailly Grand Cru.
Wednesday — Ambonnay on the Montagne de Reims, then across to Avize in the Côte des Blancs, including Agrapart Avize.
Thursday — Charles Heidsieck and Louis Roederer in Reims, followed by teaching on service, food pairing and the prestige cuvées.
Friday — Salon in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, then Pressoria in Aÿ before the return flight.
Ten participants, no more. Everyone receives a diploma from Norsk Vinfagskole on completion.
The trip is organised and sold by Fotefar Temareiser. Full programme, prices and booking are on their site.
