Louis Roederer was founded in 1776. Ninety-nine years later, in 1876, the house created Cristal at the request of Tsar Alexander II — a clear, flat-bottomed bottle made to the Tsar's specification, and the first prestige cuvée in the history of Champagne. Both anniversaries fall in 2026.
Cristal Rosé came much later, in 1974, and has always been made in far smaller volumes than the blanc. Six vintages of it in one sitting is not something that comes around often.
We pour 2014, 2013, 2012, 2009, 2005 and 2004. Twenty years of a wine that is built to be opened long after release, tasted in one row.
Two of those vintages arrive with their blanc counterpart. Cristal 2014 stands beside Cristal Rosé 2014, and Cristal 2012 beside Cristal Rosé 2012 — same year, same vineyards, two different wines. That is the closest thing to a controlled experiment Champagne allows, and it is why the two blancs are in the flight.
On provenance
Every bottle comes directly from Roederer's importer in Sweden, in a single consignment, and lands in Oslo a month before the tasting so the wines can settle before they are opened. With bottles of this age, where they have been and how they travelled matters as much as what is on the label.
